At Dental Health and Wellness Boston, we love what we do every day, but it was surprising to see that US News ranked DENTIST as the number one out of the 100 best jobs in the United States for 2013! In addition, those lovely ladies — our dental hygienists Cillen and Nanette — also enjoy a top ten ranking for their occupation of dental hygienist.
According to a US News Money segment, this annual ranking bases its selections on the Labor Department’s predictions of the occupations that should have the greatest hiring demand from now until the year 2020. The factors they used to rank the occupations included: employment prospects, median salary, future job prospects, the unemployment rate and the occupation’s estimated stress level and work-life balance.
How lucky we are to have jobs we love, and have such a positive impact on the health and lives of our patients every day. Having owned a dental practice in the Financial District of Boston for over 15 years, I can confidently say I have the best job in town! Recently I participated in a “career fair” in one of our local middle schools to introduce dentistry – dentist, dental hygienists, lab technicians and dental assistant, as a fantastic career choice.
I especially encourage women to be dentists, as I feel our manual dexterity, color perception, artistic abilities, caregiving tendencies and other qualities lend themselves to great success in this field. I love what I do and feel like the work I do is so meaningful and fun, it is not a “job”. If any of my patients have a son or daughter interested in a career in dentistry don’t hesitate to call me directly. We can talk more about the schooling requirements and day to day activities of the dental occupations and positions in our office, and even have your young person in to shadow a day in our office!
Smiles,
Dr. Jill B. Smith, DMD
